N: This study assumes that human resources in the health field should be trained to act in the Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS). This health system is undergoing significant expansion, however, it faces a critical stalemate in the process of decentralization of services - that is - the profile of a personnel which is insufficiently prepared for higher education institutions, to act in view of SUS and the conversion of the health care model. OBJECTIVE: To identify the obstacles and factors that have favored the formation of health professionals to act in SUS. METHODOLOGY: an integrative review was adopted and its application served for the exploitation of the contents of the texts found in the databases LILACS, MEDLINE and SCIELO, published in full in Portuguese from 2000 to November 2011. RESULTS: Of 1224 studies found only 06 fit in the integrative review and its results were classified into four groups: 1) the role of the teacher, 2) the practice scenarios, 3) the political pedagogical project, 4) Ministries of Health and Education programs and incentives. CONCLUSION: It is mandatory to establish the social position universities occupy in society to establish actions of co-responsibility for the construction of SUS. Funding is also considered essential for a teaching-serivce partnership, thus allowing continuous training of human resources and compliance with the duties of the State in the federal, state and municipal levels. This integrative review is timely to raise the researchers, health managers, coordinators and teachers need to investigate the effects of changing the undergraduate health sciences curriculum, and awaken interest in higher education institutions that have not reformed the curriculum to adhere to the programs and projects presented as successful in training for the SUS in selected works.
