Temporomandibular disorders can impair the quality of life causing symptoms like pain, restriction of mandibular motion and joint noise. The treatment of this problem is controversial, and consists of non-surgical modalities as physiotherapy, pharmacology, oclusal splints, psychotherapy and surgical modalities, such as arthroscopy of the temporomandibular joint, which represents a minimally invasivetechnique with high rate of success. In this paper, the literature is reviewed about temporomandibular disorders, focusing on the arthroscopic treatment. A case report of a non-reducible discdisplacement that failed to respond to five months of non-surgical management, that was submitted to the arthroscopic treatment in the department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais is also presented
