Resumen
Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is caused by atherosclerosis, which causes arterial stenosis and occludes the major blood vessels that irrigate the lower extremities, generating ischemic pain and causing physical limitations in individuals. One of the treatments to be adopted in the individual with PAD is the practice of physical exercise. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of aerobic training in elderly patients with PAD. In order to do so, we used the databases of the VHL, Cinahl, Cochrane, PEDro, PubMed and Scielo, where key words according to Decs were, aged or elderly or old *, aerobic training or exercise training or exercise therapy or walking training or cardiovascular training or cardiorespiratory training, peripheral arterial disease. We included the randomized articles published in the last 5 years and excluded articles with drug treatment, surgeries and animal studies. A total of 344 articles were identified, of which 55 were duplicates. In an analysis of the titles, 187 studies were excluded, thus, 102 articles were evaluated, but 94 studies were excluded because they used drugs, animals and because they were not randomized and 8 studies corresponded to the criteria and were analyzed in their entirety. Among the articles selected, 5 studies evaluated gait performance, 1 approached body composition, 1 investigated functional capacity and quality of life, and 1 verified inflammation and platelet activation in the elderly with PAD. It was noted that the effect of aerobic training in the elderly with PAD is effective for walking performance, decreasing body fat, improving quality of life and functional capacity
