There are many causes of early weaning in Brazil. It is known that it is prevalent and is directly associated with child mortality and morbidity increased prevalence of disease for the mothers. Thus, this study aimed to identify, through a literature review, aspects related to the causes of early weaning and strategies for its prevention. The bibliography was searched in LILACS, SciELO and official websites of the Ministry of Health The descriptors used for research were: breastfeeding and early weaning. The reading and analysis of text analysis generated three themes: breastfeeding, early weaning causes and prevention policies and strategies for prevention of early weaning. The results suggest that factors related to weaning are mainly: lack of information maternal disinterest, back to working hours, disease transmission to the child, medication use, early age of the mother, among others. The most effective strategy is maternal education either at the individual level either through operational teams. This study has generated the need to collectively build a primer to be worked from the prenatal aimed at empowering women.
