The wind power generation is rapidly becoming a viable alternative for electricity generation on a large scale. The grid connection of a wind power system requires, besides the conformation of the energy due to the random nature of generation and the search for eciency, that some power quality parameters are achieved. Modern grid codes determine that wind power generation systems must not only withstand various grid disturbances, but also contribute to the network stability support, as do conventional sources of generation. In this context, the development of a wind power system prototype allows studying techniques that guarantee the system operation according to the requirements. This thesis presents the modeling and control of a grid connected wind power generation system comprising a permanent magnet synchronous generator and a back to back converter. Two control strategies are presented. The rst control technique is a PI cascaded control in synchronous reference frame, which is the most used for this type of control. The second technique is the Interconnection and Damping Assignment Passivity-based Control (IDA-PBC), which performs the control by manipulating the total energy that ows through the system. The mathematical models of the two techniques are detailed, and simulation and experimental results are presented. The main goal is to contribute for a better understanding of the power electronics system and its control techniques, with the focus on the load disturbance rejection and the ride-through capability.
