Facial asymmetry is a challenge in the reality of clinical orthodontics because they involve dental structures, skeletal and soft tissue. The usual treatment for facial asymmetries includes orthognathic surgery accompanied by orthodontic treatment in order to improve occlusion, craniofacial and aesthetics, but patients with relatively light craniofacial asymmetry and the acceptable facial morphology can, in some cases, undergo compensatory orthodontic treatment. This study aimed to carry out a review of the literature about different forms of orthodontic treatment in adult patients with dentofacial asymmetry. In this review we were identified in the literature 25 papers describing different forms of treatment in patients with dentofacial asymmetries using orthodontic treatment or orthodontic-surgical approach. Evaluating the results of this study, it can be concluded that the ortho-surgical combination is the best option when seeking facial aesthetics. However, despite the compensatory orthodontic treatment is limited when it is indicated, it may excellent results and patient satisfaction. Keywords: Facial Asymmetry. Orthodontic treatment. Orthodontics. Orthognathic surgery.
