Dental avulsion is a traumatic injury that is characterized by the complete displacement of the tooth from its socket causing damage both to the supporting structures of the dental element structures as pulp. The injury to supporting structures is represented by total rupture of the fibers of the periodontal ligament and damage to the root surface during the accident. Moreover, the persistence of extra-oral dental element avulsed for long periods or inadequate storage media may cause additional damage. The dental reimplantation is defined as the repositioning of an avulsed tooth and has been widely accepted as an effective means of preserving avulsed teeth. However, while literature is unanimous on the benefits of immediate replantation, which is observed most often is that this is an exception, and the teeth are missing or improperly maintained. This fact implies that constitute the root resorption in the most common sequelae after tooth reimplantation with a reported prevalence between 74 and 96%, representing a major cause of loss of replanted teeth. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the conditions of handling and emergency treatment of 453 patients, referred to our clinic at the Dental Trauma FOUFMG during the last 24 years (1986-2010). The results of this experiment demonstrate that continued treatment in the medium and long term was not satisfactory. Further studies are needed to enable us to evaluate the causes of endodontic intervention late observed in our sample.
