dc.description.abstract | Mucocele is a mucus extravasation phenomenon, which can be caused by trauma to the excretory salivary duct or by its obstruction. Histologically, this lesion can be classified as a mucus extravasation phenomenon or as a retention mucous cyst. It is a benign lesion, most often on the lower lip, but it may also be found under the tongue, on the palate and on the buccal mucosa. When located on the floor of the mouth it is called a ranula. The mucocele clinically presents it self as a bubble, with episodes of increase and decrease in size, a soft consistency, asymptomatic, and a bluish coloring or similar to the mucosa depending on the depth of the lesion. There is no predilection for gender. All clinical aspects of the mucocele are important for the correct diagnosis. There are several treatment options for the mucocele, and the micromarsupialization is a more conservative technique, easy to perform and well tolerated by patients. This technique aims to promote epithelialization around a suture, forming new excretory channels, thus allowing the evacuation of the mucus and the regression of the lesion. This study was done on a revision of existing literature and a case was presented of a mucocele treated with the technique of micromarsupialization. The patient had follow-up visits for 7 months after the surgery and showed no clinical signs of relapse. The treatment of selected types of mucoceles with the micromarsupialização technique is effective. | |
