This work presents a new methodology to obtain substituted 1,4-naphthoquinones, with moderate to excellent yields, from their respective naphthols, using a simple combination of diphenyl diselenide, hydrogen peroxide and molecular oxygen. To this new method, 22 naphthols were subjected, containing various substituent groups, three of them being unpublished, and the respective products were successfully achieved invarious examples. Among the 18 achieved naphthoquinones, 6 are unpublished and two of them could have their structure resolved by studies of X-ray crystallography. An alternative combination of diphenyl diselenide/hydrogen peroxide with carbon nanotuberhodium nanohybrid was also reported to provide 1,4-naphthoquinones employing atenfold lower amount of diphenyl diselenide in comparison with the same method without this catalyst, without compromising the yields observed so far. The evaluation of the trypanocidal activity of 11 of the obtained 1,4-naphthoquinones showed that, in general, these compounds have promising activity, such that 7 of them showed an activity betterthan Benznidazol, the drug used so far to treat the Chagas Disease. The data presented here may indicate a new horizont in the achievement of more efficient drugs headed to the treatment of Chagas Disease.
