This research paper was based on the observation of the uses and applications of existing taxonomies, according to several sources. Taxonomies contribute to a more accurate information retrieval in the web environment, since they can guide the user in their search, directing navigation through classes and subclasses in the instrument structure. Taxonomies are studied in different areas of knowledge and for different purposes. In this research, corporate taxonomies (support for information and knowledge management) and faceted taxonomies (structured in facets, dimensions, aspects or attributes, which allow the user to combine and filter the retrieved results) are used as tools of knowledge and information organization. Thus, the objective of this work is to map the uses and applications of corporate and faceted taxonomies in large areas of knowledge, by mapping a set of analysis categories into thesis and dissertation documents, exploring the state of the art of the issues involved. The theoretical framework provides inputs on the knowledge and information organization and representation, as well as on taxonomies in general, with emphasis on corporate and faceted taxonomies. The methodology included an initial bibliographical survey, without restriction of time and area of knowledge, of theses and dissertations available in the Theses and Dissertations Catalog of the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior Capes). After an analysis of all the recovered material, grouped by large areas of knowledge, it focused on the academic output in Information Science (IC) and Computer Science (CS), which use taxonomies as an instrument of knowledge and information organization. In this material, the content analysis proposed by Bardin was used as a method, with the determination of four categories of analysis. The results indicate that, in the 10 dissertations analyzed in both areas, IC and CC, there was a higher incidence of faceted taxonomies, and that IC has the largest number of researches on the topic. Considering that the number of researches related to the issue is still low, it is concluded that further studies are needed to produce new knowledge about the use of corporate and faceted taxonomies in the knowledge and information organization.
