Salop and Stiglitz's 1977 paper "Bargains and Ripoffs: A Model of Monopolistically Competitive Price Dispersion" presents two self-excluding "hypotheses." The presence of this problem leads to results that should not occur, especially in its lemma 4. We will assume that both "hypotheses" are true, not simultaneously, and expose the two resulting models.
