dc.description.abstractThe relation between music and Deafness has been discussed by several areas of knowledge, such as Pedagogy in the Human Sciences; Music, Dance and Drama in the Arts; Music Therapy and Neurosciences in the Health Sciences. However, few theoretical frameworks were found, which discuss this issue under Music Education perspective. Toward this background, the aim of this research is to study how music can be understood by young Deaf who study in the Núcleo Vida. They are diagnosed with severe and profound deafness. For this purpose, data were collected and analyzed from the music classes given to three young Deaf students among hearer friends. This research showed important factors to the young Deafs musical comprehension. These factors are: the perception of vibration, the musical practice with percussion instruments and the usage of body as their own instrument. It was verified that during this practice, the Deaf students had adopted specific behaviors when doing certain activities, such as singing and play percussion instruments. Besides, it was observed that they frequently had done body movements while doing the music classes activities. These actions happened in an integrated way with the purpose to absorb the rhythm of the suggested activities and to realize the pitch of the sound produced by the voice. The results point out a meaningful musical development by the Deaf students, and reveal how important and healthy is the music making for this young people. In conclusion, we realize that music has touched these young Deaf students entirely through the experience, and their musical comprehension depends, mainly, on uncountable influences received in their learning contexts, whether at home, at school, at work or in their Culture.
