Resumen
The electrical power systems have some limitations, that may cause under utilization of the transmission line. The advent of the power thyristors, in the 50s, started the development of equipments capable of controlling power flow, known as Dynamic Var Compensator. Nowadays, the equipments available on the market to compansate rapid variations on reactive power supplied by any load are the Static Var Compensator (SVC) and the Static Syncronous Compensator (STATCOM). The literature available indicates the STATCOM as a high dynamic performance compensator, but it has the disadvantage of using expansive solid state switches. On the other hand, the SVC has limitations on its performance, that are associated with low price. However the informations supplied about the limitations on the performance of this equipments are very simplified and insufficient for its real characterization. In this study it is presented a comparative analysis among the SVC and the STATCOM connected in a high power industrial system. First, it is demonstrated that SVC is not able to detach active and reactive power flow between the compensator and the electric power systems. Moreover, it is studied the real limitations on dynamic performance of the SVC and the STATCOM, demonstrating that, for high power applications, the technological restrictions make both of them present similar characteristics.
