This paper aims to study a group of 32 documents\receipts signed by the sculptor Antônio Francisco Lisboa, best known as “Aleijadinho”. Taking History of Written Culture approach, these documents are perceived as materials records of written practices in the Captaincy of Minas Gerais at the end of the 18th century. From formal and material analyses, they are understood as materialized signals of the artist’s life and critically related to his biography, as it is known today. It also aims to give a small contribution to the long and difficult work that is to identify the artist’s source of knowledge and the various skills he had applied in his artwork, as well as to understand who he was in relation to the culture of his time.
