Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death in Brazil and hypertension are among its main risk factors. Non-adherence to treatment of hypertension is one of the most important problems faced by professionals working in primary care. Generates substantial costs, the poor control rates achieved, which result in increased morbidity and mortality consequent to this syndrome. The issue of adherence to treatment is complex because several factors are associated. Thus it is believed to be extremely important to review the literature on factors associated with resistance to adherence to antihypertensive treatment. This work was carried out in order to make a review of the literature on the determinants associated with resistance to adherence to antihypertensive treatment that may be contributing to the control of hypertension. From the study it was observed that the determinants for the adherence to the treatment of hypertension have shown the influence of structural variables such as chronic and asymptomatic disease, the doctor-patient relationship, the complexity of treatment regimens, the Side effects of medications, among others. We conclude that adherence to treatment is one of the most important challenges for the management of patients with hypertension.
