Resumen
The study aimed to discuss the importance of research of maternal colonization by Group B Streptococcus (GBS) in pre-natal health of the population, especially for pregnant women, childbirth, postpartum women and their newborns, and identify through study of programs for health care of women found in Brazil, Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, the existence of measures for prevention and detection of GBS infection. It is a traditional literature review, based on scientific articles published between 2001 to 2010. The research sources were used LILACS databases using the keywords "Streptococcus agalactiae" and "Streptococcal Infections" and, as a reference for the search, the keywords "pregnancy", "pregnancy" and "sepsis." From the selected publications, reverse search was performed to complement the theoretical and researched to CDC publications on the subject under study. It was observed that, although there are credible scientific publications and recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other organizations, as well as positive results for the American universal screening of pregnant women during the prenatal identification of colonization by GBS, as well as the adoption of intrapartum chemoprophylaxis and reduction of neonatal morbidity and mortality for this disease, Brazil, Minas Gerais and, specifically, Belo Horizonte, have not given due importance to the risks inherent in maternal and neonatal GBS infection, a situation reflected in the absence of technical protocols for control and prevention of neonatal streptococcal infection.
