Resumen
Accidents involving venomous animals are a life-threatening clinical emergence. The treatment should be readily provided accordingly to each poisonous species (toads, spiders and scorpions) involved. Should consist in fluid therapy promptly, treatment of symptoms, checking of cardiovascular and respiratory parameters and whenever necessary, analgesia and anesthesia must be provided. There are many misunderstandings about the treatment of poisoning and new therapeutic approaches have been developed not only to neutralize toxins`s effects (with high specificity and potency) but also as initial compounds for development of new drugs for industrial and therapeutic use. Toxins of these animals are valuable tools as pharmacological models for having a stable molecular structure that interacts with specific membrane receptors and for being unlikely degraded by endogenous human and animal enzymes. This review has the objective to approach the main aspects related to clinical and laboratorial diagnosis, treatment of accidents involving venomous animals and the applicability of these toxins for therapeutic purposes.
