Introduction: Many individuals with Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) and Intermittent claudication (IC) are elderly and with the aging process, the association of comorbidities and risk factors of coexistence which hinders the proper conduct of traditional rehabilitation programs is frequent. Thus, the need arises for other forms of safe and effective treatment for this population. Objective: To review the literature options for alternative therapies for the treatment of elderly patients with PAD who have IC and limitations to the conventional treatment of aerobic activity walk type. Methods: We performed searches using the Medline, LILACS, SciELO, PEDro, and the Cochrane Library. Results: We selected 10 articles, six randomized clinical trials, two literature reviews, one Systematic review and a feasibility study. Three of these articles evaluated muscle resistance training lower limbs, two analyzed strengthen plantar flexors, three addressed the muscle electrostimulation, one evaluated the use of the upper limb cycle ergometer and a product used mechanical compression apparatus of the calf muscle. Discussion: We found the results that all alternative therapies for PAD discussed in this review offer significant improvements in maximum walking distance and claudication distance, improving functional capacity and quality of life. Conclusion: There are alternatives therapies in individuals with PAD paragraph IC what are effective in the treatment of disease. Both therapies increase as the distance from walk of individuals, when compared the walk treatment have low cost, possibility of home care, may provide better adherence to treatment and improve the quality of life of individuals.
