This study aimed to investigate the choro's musical improvisation and the way the chorões learn and teach it, through the viewpoints of some choro musicians and scholars, in view of the wide dissemination of methodologies from [or inspired by] jazz culture. Based primarily on talk-about-music, this work presents a more conceptual and philosophical [but no less practical] approach - after all, the speech is able to shape not only our thinking but also our actions, in short and long term. Since the speech of chorões and o choro musicians and scholars is the raw material for this study, we collected twelve semi-structured interviews, of which we highlight and bring together a number of meanings and values essential to understanding the phenomenon of musical improvisation practiced by the traditional chorões. In the processes of influencing of and/or hybridization between jazz and choro cultures, many of these values and meanings clash causing some confusion as to the origin and purposes of improvisation in each of these cultures. In investigating the emic view of chorões, we wish to develop more of an ethnopedagogic awareness, so needed in the incorporation of popular music in ours music schools.
