Resumen
BACKGROUND: Low back pain is a major health problem in todays society. Lumbar extension strength training is performed in the rehabilitation of people suffering from low back pain, but still exist a lack of studies that proves its efficacy in such subjects after discectomy surgery. METHOD: A search in databases bibliographic was performed using the keywords: low back pain; discectomy and lumbar extension exercises. Through research in databases, as Medlne, SciELO, PEDro and LILACS, were selected summaries of studies that meet the criteria of the initial selection, and requested copies of the original articles. RESULTS: 72 papers were identified in the initial research performed in the databases cited above. The author selected studies that involved some kind of lumbar extension strength training in patients with low back pain after discectomy surgery, in comparison with other techniques of intervention or no form of treatment. After the initial analysis, only six papers met the criteria for inclusion and were elected to take place in this research of the literature. CONCLUSION: In spite of the results, attesting the efficacy of lumbar extension training to improve pain and disability, such results should be analyzed cautiously due to the lack of studies and poor number of participants.
