Resumen
With the advent of disruptive technologies, notably the Internet of Things and Big Data, objects gained a degree of smartnessthat allowed them to interact with their users. Following this trend, cities have also become intelligent through the integration of communication and information technology into their physical infrastructure. Smart tourist destinations apply the principles of smart cities to urban or rural areas to support the mobility, lodging, food and entertainment of their visitors, mainly through applications that connect them to the experiences available at the destination. In this context, this article aims to present an evaluative and relational bibliometric study about smart tourism destinations. 96 articles published between 2007 and 2018 in tourism and management's journals was taken out from the Web of Science database. Data were analyzed with VOSviewer software. Their mapping revealed that the researchers studied the topic from the perspective of co-creation of value, smart cities and smart tourism, leaving gaps in favor of new research possibilities such as (1) the operationalization of models with perceptions, attitudes, beliefs and subjective norms of tourists and their impacts on their behavioral intentions (2) the investigation of behavioral and attitudinal differences between groups of tourists, such as physically vulnerable tourists, young people, and theelderly, and (3) the assessment of social, environmental, economic and financial outcomes of the smart tourism destination over its stakeholders.
