In this article, the management of scientific and technological knowledge generated at the Federal University of Minas Gerais - UFMG is described based on four aspects. Foremost, by analyzing the intellectual property management applied to its innovation activities in order to ascertain both positive and negative aspects of the dynamics of the Technological Innovation Center called Coordenadoria de Transferência e Inovação Tecnológica - CTIT, as well as contributing to the implementation of other Technological Innovation Centers in the university environment. The second is dedicated to the analysis of legal instruments used in the formalization of negotiations regarding the matter. In the third, the legal system involving drug patents is covered in order to show the performance of Brazil in an attempt to fix the Brazilian patent system problems of the ensuring the populations access to medicines. The fourth and final part of the presentation is a compilation of the Brazilian law relating to biotechnology researches in order to analyze their influences from the development process of researches using biotechnological procedures and proper protection of the results, up to the placement of these products in the market with the permission of the National Agency for Sanitary Surveillance (Agência Nacional de Vigilância Sanitária ANVISA), with the objective of meeting the needs of dedicated researchers to the regulation field and its knowledge, thereby guaranteeing the results of their research which can generate products capable of being produced and commercialized, since the established procedures by the law is respected and the benefits of this technology is enjoyable by the Brazilian population in the most efficient manner. The Actual results demonstrate that innovation management is a relatively recent and increasingly important activity in Brazil, which warrants the Núcleo de Inovação Tecnológico (NIT) UFMGs creation of an organizational structure, human resources training, and specific contractual rules in the preparation of legal instruments to formalize these transactions, identifying the best strategies that will lead to technological innovation. There was also verification of the need for serious public policy formulation in the health field which recognizes the importance of research in generating new drugs with better healing powers by establishing a reasonable price control of these drugs to ensure access of the population without disregarding the Intellectual Property aspect; besides concluding that the Brazilian laws which regulate biotechnology research often act as barriers to the development of research and generation of new biotechnology products, and such deserve urgent legal review aiming at the fluidity of this research in benefit of the society.
