This research investigates the production of school essays resulting from the activity of transformation of a given text into another text (re-textualization), the text which is retextualizated belongs to the genre infographic. The aim is to draw a picture of the operations involved in that activity, using the Rhetorical Structure Theory RST. This is atheory that explains the text structure by using relations that occur recursively between successively larger parts of a text. Then, we observe wich are the rhetorical relations in the infographic and which are in the school compositions in order to establish a comparative between the two texts while investigating in which degree the rethorical structure was kept. The corpus worked comprises 13 school compositions written by students of the ninth year of schooling in Brazil, in regular classroom settings. The theoretical and methodological framework of this investigation is funded, by one side, in Textual Linguistics concerningthe general aspects of text production and in the activity of e-textualization; by the other side, on the Functionalism studies through the RST. The analyses revealed that the students could understand the infographic as a text and they were able to construct coherent andcohesive texts. As conclusion, we can say that re-textualization can be used in a very productive way in classroom and that RST is a theory that can be used in the study of texts coherence and cohesion.
