Resumen
This study aimed to characterize and to evaluate the corrosion resistance of automotive fuel tanks made of galvanized steel and galvanized steel with organometallic coating. Flat plates of galvanized steel with organometallic coating of the fuel tank, provided by two manufacturers, were studied; and galvanized samples were used as reference. The study focused specifically on the corrosion of external side of tank, which is exposed to atmospheric environment. The cyclic accelerated corrosion tests SAE J2334 and GMW 14872, which provide good simulation of atmospheric marine environment, were used in the study and accelerated Salt Spray test was used to compare the quality of steel coatings and to compare with the other tests. Furthermore, the characterization of the steel coatings was performed before testing for evaluation of corrosion resistance. Samples of galvanized steel with coatings organometallic showed similar behavior against corrosion when subjected to the SAE J2334 testing and GMW 14872, and different behaviors against corrosion when analyzed using the Salt Spray test. The galvanized steel exhibited lower corrosion resistance than the galvanized steel with organometallic coating.
