This paper aims to discuss the positioning and strategies adopted by organizations in
globalized markets, in order to achieve better competitiveness in their products and maintain its
sustainability in the system. One strategy is to merge with other organizations, in joint ventures.
In this paper, the focus will be given in the processes of global purchasing, within these alliances.
There will be an analysis of the integration in the sector (purchasing), and about the achievement
of competitiveness in the joint activities. The first chapter has a theoretical approach, focusing on
contingency theory and strategy theory; the second will address the theme Integration and Global
Purchasing and the third will deal with the case study of two multinationals in the automotive
sector, and, then, it will be possible to get a more practical approach of the subject. It will be
possible to understand that, in many cases, the global / joint purchasing strategy is not the most
appropriate and efficient manner to reach lower costs and competitiveness.
