This thesis reports on a study drawing on Systemic Functional Theory (SFT) (HALLIDAY; MATTHIESSEN, 2014) and affiliated to Translation Studies ( (HOLMES, 1972). The main aim is examine pattern of VERBAL PROCESSES and VERBAL CLAUSES in dialogical exchanges in fictional texts written in German (Tonio Kröger by Thomas Mann and Vierundzwanzig Stunden aus dem Leben einer Frau by Stefan Zweig) and their translations and retranslations into Brazilian Portuguese. Grammatical categories (HALLIDAY e MATTHIESSEN, 2014), narratological categories (RIMMON-KENAN, 2005) and translation categories (CARTFORD, 1965) were annotated, and data were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The analysis sought to: i) compare VERBAL PROCESS pattern in translations and retranslations; ii) verify whether the results found confirmed Berman's (1990) retranslation hypothesis; and iii) compare the results obtained for the German-Portuguese samples with those obtained by Pagano (2017) and Guimarães (2018) for English-Portuguese samples. The corpus was compiled from samples of two novels written in German, their first translations (published between the 1930s and 1950s) and retranslations (published between the 1990s and 2010s) into Brazilian Portuguese. The methodology was based on Pagano (2017) and consisted of: a) selecting ten excerpts with dialogues with approximately 300 words each; b) aligning the original texts and their translations; c) manually annotating grammatical, narratological and translational categories in electronic spreadsheets; d) extracting data using the software and programming environment R (R Core Team, 2018); and e) analyzing data quantitatively and qualitatively. The results reveal that both novels presented analogous selections of grammar categories, but each novel selected different narratological categories as the most frequent. First translations and retranslations into Brazilian Portuguese presented analogous patterns to those of original texts. The retranslation hypothesis (Berman, 1990) was not confirmed in the corpus, since translation and retranslation are closer in Tonio Kröger, and the first translation is closer to the original text than the retranslation for Vierundzwanzig Stunden aus dem Leben einer Frau. The results were not the same of those obtained by Pagano (2017) and Guimarães (2018) for English-Portuguese samples.
