The present work aims to recognize the trajectory of art education in Brazil, highlighting the teaching of visual arts and the contribution of the practice of drawing in childhood to the development of the child, especially during the process of literacy. The importance of teaching drawing is described in the construction of learning in a broad and specific way in the early years of schooling. The teaching of drawing in childhood is understood, in this work, as a precursor of writing, being directly related to the process of acquiring new learning and languages. The bibliographical survey of authors and their research (BARBOSA, Ana Mae; LUQUET, G. H .; DERDYK,
Edith; DUARTE, Maria Lúcia Batezat, among others) supported and supported the writing of the monograph. Supported by these authors, it is evident that the child starts from the drawing first, to then carry out the writing and, thus, that the practice of drawing acts as a structuring factor of verbal thinking, combined with the child's expression, imagination and creative production.
