Resumen: El moderno sistema-mundo y la evolución. El moderno sistema-mundo ha sido un tipo muy particular de sistema histórico, distinto de cualquier otro del que hayamos tenido conocimiento hasta ahora. Es una economía-mundo, seguramente no la primera, pero la única que sobrevivió bastante tiempo para institucionalizar un modo de producción capitalista, y en consecuencia la única economía mundo que ha tenido éxito en ampliar sus límites externos para abarcar el globo entero. Solo la economía-mundo capitalista ha hecho de la acumulación de capital la fuerza motriz. Esta estructura es coherente, y ha funcionado efectivamente por unos 500 años. Ahora ha alcanzado los límites de esa eficacia.

Summary: The Modern World-System and Evolution. The modern world-system has been a very particular type of historical system, unlike any other that we have heretofore known. It is a world-economy, to be sure not the first ever, but the only one that survived long enough to institutionalize a capitalist mode of production, and as a result the only world-economy that has ever succeeded in expanding its outer boundaries to encompass the entire globe. Only the capitalist world-economy has made the accumulation of capital the prime mover. This structure is coherent, and has operated effectively for some 500 years. It has now reached the limits of that effectiveness.
