Sobre los occidentalismos fonéticos de las Profecías de Merlín en los Baladros castellanos

Abstract

Resumen: el Baladro de Burgos (1498) y la Demanda de Sevilla (1535) constituyen los únicos testimonios hoy conocidos de un romanceamiento castellano medieval de las Prophetiae Merlini de Godofredo de Monmouth. Se trata de una versión muy deturpada y ciertos rasgos dialectales occidentales nos permiten sospechar que parte de las lecciones inadmisibles surgieron por causas lingüísticas. Enfocado en el nivel fonético, este artículo examinará tanto los occidentalismos evidentes, esos aún presentes en los testimonios, como los conjeturales, aquellos que pueden deducirse de sus errores; estos resultan importantes pues certifican que los rasgos lingüísticos que nos interesan remontan a etapas previas de la tradición textual.

Abstract: The Baladro from Burgos (1498) and the Demanda from Seville (1535) constitute the only extant witnesses of a medieval Castilian translation of the Prophetiae Merlini by Geoffrey of Monmouth. The version is quite corrupt and some Western dialectal traits allows us to suspect that part of the inadmissible readings had a linguistic cause. Focused on the phonetic level, this article will examine both the evident Western forms, those still existing in the witnesses, and the conjectural ones, those that can be deduced from their errors; these are important because they certify that the linguistic traits that interest us go back to previous stages of the textual tradition.
