The first decade of the 21st century has represented an important period for Compañía de Empaques
S:A. because it has managed to maintain stable results despite difficulties always present on
the market and all of this because of a successful negotiation strategy with is union: SINTRAEMPAQUES
and the Union of the industry: SINTRAINDUPLASCOL represented in the Union Contract,
signed in October 2000 and whose details are described in the present case.
S.A. was founded in 1938 in the city of Medellín, Colombia, and it is dedicated to the production
and marketing of packaging in natural and synthetic fibers. Their total sales in 2009 were 85.327
billion pesos, of which 13% corresponds to exports and its net income was 842 million. Its total
assets were 172.609 billion pesos with a capital of 133.353 million. The total number of people
who worked at the end of the year 2009 was 814 of which 406 belonged to the Union Contract
The Union Contract is a form of collective agreement existing in the Colombian labour legislation
since the mid-20th century which allows to improve relations between trade unions and employers
by ensuring a decent income and promoting the stability of employment of workers through
the provision of services through its affiliates.
