dc.description.abstract | El cáncer diferenciado de tiroides es la neoplasia más frecuente del sistema endocrino. Actualmente las tasas de incidencia y prevalencia en todo el mundo de este tipo de cáncer van en aumento lo cual se explica en parte por una mejor accesibilidad a los servicios de salud especializados, mayor disponibilidad de métodos diagnósticos más eficientes y mayor densidad de personal médico capacitado. Sin embargo no todo lo anterior explica per se la totalidad del problema si no que, además hay evidencia científica de que existe una creciente incidencia real de los casos y sus razones aún son fuente de controversia en todo el mundo. En general el pronóstico del cáncer diferenciado de tiroides es muy bueno con tasas de supervivencia a los 10 años de seguimiento que oscilan entre 80 y 90% según diferentes estudios, por otra parte, el pronóstico se ve afectado inevitablemente por factores como la edad del paciente al momento del diagnóstico, el tipo histológico del cáncer tiroideo y la presencia o ausencia de metástasis locoregionales entre otras. El cáncer diferenciado de tiroides puede presentarse como un nódulo tiroideo único o múltiple, aunque generalmente es multicéntrico y bilateral, puede ser un hallazgo fortuito durante el examen ecográfico o puede asociarse a síntomas como dolor o disfonía. Es importante determinar la necesidad de yodoterapia dependiendo del riesgo de recurrencia o enfermedad persistente posterior al manejo quirúrgico inicial. Por todo lo anterior y teniendo en cuenta el creciente avance relacionado con el diagnósitco y tratamiento de este tipo de cáncer, se realizó la presente revisión bibliográfica con el objetivo de actualizar el conocimiento sobre el papel que juega el yodo radiactivo y sus diferentes modalidades de uso en estos pacientes, para lo cual fue necesaria la consulta de diferentes fuentes como Elsevier y Medline mediante portales de búsqueda como Clinicalkey y Ovid. | |
