Caracterización epidemiológica del trauma ocular en los pacientes ingresados al servicio de optometría del Municipio de Santa Rosa del Sur, Bolívar en el año 2015-2016

Ocular trauma is interesting area for field research and practice in public health. The clinical manifestations of eye injuries range from minor bruises to severe open-globe injuries and immediate loss of visual function with economic and psychological consequences. Purpose: To determine the epidemiological characteristics of ocular trauma in Santa Rosa del Sur, Bolívar. Methods: Patients with eye injuries treated Salud Visual Eye Care Center from 1 June 2015 to 30 July 2016 were included in the current retrospective study. All patients completed a comprehensive examination and interview. Demographic characteristics and injury details were recorded. The International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) and Birmingham Eye Trauma Terminology (BETT) were used. Results: The incidence 3.61 per 1.000 cases. The average age of eye injury patients was 32.62 years and 136 (94%) were male. 71,72% of the injuries were work-related. Among the 145 total patients (148 eyes), 143 (96.62%), were close globe injuries, 125 lamellar laceration and 18 contusions. There were only 5 open globe injuries.
