Resumen
Objective: The main objective of this research was to establish the distribution of Candida species colonizing the oral cavity of a population of cancer patients in the metropolitan area of Bucaramanga; so that for its scope the main demographic profiles of a sample of patients were characterized, to later determine the level of colonization of candida yeasts in the oral cavity, identifying the level of species and their profile. Method: The study methodology was characterized by being quantitative, observational, descriptive and cross-sectional. Univariate analysis was performed and summary measures were presented according to the nature of the variables. Proportions and percentages were used for qualitative variables (age, socioeconomic status, marital status) and trend measures were calculated for quantitative variables, and the CFU count variable was recategorized into levels according to the literature review. Result: It was found that in 70% of patients with cancer, there was growth of Candida, one of its main risk factors being poor hygiene, lack of knowledge of prosthesis treatment and other consequences that require medical, personal and nutritional commitment. Conclusion: From this study was established the complex Candida albicans/C. dubliniensis was mainly found in patients with in62,5% colonization level.
