The El Llanito swamp is a body of water formed thanks to the water dynamics between the lagoon complex and the middle basin of the Magdalena River, through a set of pipes located in the middle zone of the Magdalena River valley.
The El Llanito marsh and its ecosystem, thanks to its connection with the river, becomes a key determinant of life in the township of El Llanito and has an important influence on the municipality of Barrancabermeja, mainly for two reasons: Its buffering function of the river level in the rainy season, from April to November, which prevents excessive flooding in winter; and the ecological condition it obtains thanks to the exchange of water between ecosystems of the lentic type (the lagoons).
