The project aims to design and build a data acquisition system to determine the modulus of elasticity and the Poisson ratio in some rocky materials. The equipment will allow testing from rock cores subjected to uniaxial compression tests supported by load measurement sensors. The use of these unconventional equipment is very useful for the development of research in the areas of study of the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the Santo Tomas University. These techniques allow the student to establish the importance of using real values, leaving aside the implementation of purely empirical values.
Determining the resistance of rocky materials in different civil engineering activities such as the foundations of buildings, stability of slopes and the execution of tunnels is an important factor for the characterization of rocky materials. This characterization represents a fundamental part for the design of the structures and the possible construction methods that can be used.
The implementation of the equipment necessary to measure these elastic constants is based on the technical parameters of ASTM Designation D3148-72. This equipment is made up of an electronic data acquisition system where its main foundation is the measurement of loads. It will also have software that will graphically display the data and allow it to be exported in a TXT format for handling. Finally, a guide will be designed with the step-by-step description for mounting the strain gauges in the rock cores, thus allowing to carry out university practices in related areas.
