Resumen
Scope
This article presents the validation and application results of the instrument and the occupational health and safety management maturity scale in a National Order Colombian Public Entity.
Methodology
A transversal correlational study was carried out to assess the management maturity of the OSHSAS in the study scenario, EMA-OHSAS was applied, designed for the Colombian working population. A sample of 1729 employees from seven branches from a National Order Colombian Public Entity was considered. A construct validation was carried out from factorial analysis and its internal consistency was inquired by the Cronbach’s Alpha test.
Results
An excellent internal consistency and a high correlation between the items were obtained. It was established that the overall maturity level of the MS-OHSAS in the organization is 4: proactive management of OHSAS. Each branch has differences that show deviations that must be addressed through improvement actions.
Research Limitations
The research limitation is related to the findings, in addition to be a national order public entity, other Colombian public entities cannot be generalized. It is required to apply it to a representative sample of entities.
Practical Implications
The findings will be useful to sensitize those in charge of the MS-OHSAS in the entity studied to generate actions to improve the system and promote its maturity, an aspect that will strengthen the creation of a positive safety and health culture.
Social Implications
This research will help improve working conditions, health and quality of life of public servers from all over the country who work in the entity studied. As long as servers enjoy a better welfare and quality of work life, it will generate changes in the quality of provisioning services to Colombian citizens.
Originality/value
Information was provided to decision makers for them to have a better understanding of the issues that require higher priority in the OHSAS in the public entity studied. The results are based on the perception of public servers; therefore, it derives in intervention actions focused on an interested party in the management system, which until a while ago was not part of the system and it was unprotected at work.
