Resumen
Introduction. Eating disorders are severe alterations in food intake, in people who present distorted patterns in the act of eating in response to a psychic impulse. Objective. To determine the level of knowledge about eating disorders (TCA) and their oral manifestations in teaching dentists at the Santo Tomas University. Method. An analytical, cross-sectional observational study was carried out in 60 teaching dentists from the Santo Tomas University. The instrument applied in the study carried out by Isabella Vilaza at the University of Chile in 2008 was adapted, which consisted of 82 questions distributed in nine large dimensions, including sociodemographic variables. According to the score obtained, scores between 1 and 42 were established as a low level of knowledge, a moderate level of knowledge was between 42 and 55, and a high level of knowledge was between 56 and 70. In the statistical analysis, measures were applied summary according to the nature of the variables; the bivariate analysis included Chi2 test and Fisher's exact test for qualitative variables and Student's t test for quantitative variables. The distribution of the quantitative variables was observed with the Shapiro Wilk test and statistical significance was considered for those P values 0.05. Results. The median age of the participants was 50 years with an interquartile range between 36.5 and 55.5 years, the female sex was the most frequent with 68.3% (41). On average, the teachers had 12.3 (± 8.9) years of relationship with the institution and 22.4 (± 10.0) years of experience. It was found that 90% (54) of the participants have clarity in the definition of the term Eating Disorders. In turn, it was evidenced that 70% (42) of the teachers recognize these behaviors as socially relevant pictures. According to the global score, the participants presented a low level of knowledge on the subject, however, it was shown that the female sex achieved a better score in the knowledge test, which allowed establishing a statistically significant difference compared to the results of gender male. Conclusion: It was evidenced that the teachers presented strengths in relation to the definition and social relevance of eating disorders, as well as in the dental management of people suffering from this type of disorder. However, it was determined that in general the teaching dentists of the Santo Tomas University have a low level of knowledge about eating disorders and their oral manifestations.
