The theoretical development and research of nursing during their evolutionary process was determined by factors various inheritance and became limiting in the step vocation to profession, mainly in Latin American countries ; which resulted in a fragmented theoretical development , which has not been consolidated to guide the training process . Thus, this thesis aims to propose, raise the epistemological status of nursing from theoretical developments, to make a contribution to the processes of nursing education and Health Sciences. Specifically for the nursing profession, this thesis contributes to the consolidation of nursing as a professional discipline. The methodology for the development of the thesis, took as reference and the grounded theory and as a tool the Atlas Sofware ti you, following one by one the steps recommended for the management of information. As a tool for gathering information the semistructured interview for the first six nurses and others (as) ten participants required to fill out a questionnaire was used; both instruments contained the same parameters to investigate, until saturation of information was obtained. Participants signed an informed consent and to validate the accuracy of the answers to the first six nurses, older and formed the first Colleges of Nursing, the Minimental previously applied the test, which verifies the memory capacity of the participants. The proposal of the epistemological status of nursing raises the mainstreaming of nursing as a science, ethics of care as well as an art / aesthetics, in turn , in addition to the four metaparadigmáticos includes other concepts such as being, existence and life , which extend the metaparadigm of nursing. This epistemological proposal raises research development that revolves around the use of qualitative methods with a hermeneutic approach, without ignoring the contributions of quantitative methods based on positivism.
