This work aims to demonstrate the advantages of the creation of a regulatory framework to consider cryptocurrencies as a means of exchange, which might promote the use of digital currencies, particularly Bitcoin, as a payment means that may guarantee security, speed, and low costs. First of all, the origin and evolution of this cryptocurrency are described along with the text; Then, there is a brief review of how its usage was produced, starting from a global perspective, until reaching out to the Latin American region, mainly Colombia; Therefore, a detailed exploration of the regulations and announcements of the Colombian government about cryptocurrencies is carried out in the text; Finally, the advantages and disadvantages of trading with these cryptocurrencies is discussed to explain why the Colombian legislative should adopt an active role in the issue and use of cryptocurrencies
