A union is a permanent association of workers whose purpose is to defend the rights of workers and negotiate with employers to obtain better wages and working conditions. It is an association that defends and promotes economic, social and professional interests related to professional and work activity. Collective autonomy is composed of a set of powers or faculties, such as:
Power of self-organization of the group and of self-regulation of its internal sphere of action. (union autonomy)
Power of autonomous determination of working conditions. (normative autonomy)
Power to use one's own means of coercion (self-supervision)
Power to carry out other activities for the benefit of the organized group.
Now, ¿how can unions operate, based on the new way of working due to the COVID-19 pandemic?
In general, in this contingency, it can all the more reason guarantee the worker's rights, both in salary, working hours and legal guarantees that they must provide and guarantee in labor contracts. This eventuality is something that nobody could foresee and clearly Colombia was an impacted country, but as a result of this new work modalities were strengthened such as teleworking where in this way the worker is guaranteed personal protection and that of his family, guaranteeing in this way the family basket of each one of them. I also force entrepreneurs to develop new horizons for their businesses and possible growth.
The unions can be an inconvenience for the employer in the new work measures used by the contingency of the COVID-19, because they can be forcing to maintain jobs, which by necessity are no longer required, such as cleaning work, maintenance, among others . Which can lead to the liquidation of companies, given that their income has decreased (as in most sectors of the economy). For workers, this effect has a negative impact because in certain cases fundamental rights are violated, in the same way, the accelerated evolution makes technology increasingly replace workers.
