dc.description.abstract | There is a reaction that occurs regularly in the history of the city and urban planning regarding the forms of urban growth, or the evolution of the city, or when the spaces are specialized due to social segregation or functional zoning, when the city loses quality or, there is a social and cultural reaction regarding public space.
That is why a public space is not necessarily a residual space between streets and buildings. Neither is it an empty space, nor a space with a specific use to which it has to go. For it to be a potential public space, something else is needed, such as a dynamic and potentially active social integration scenario, whose sole purpose is to satisfy the needs so that society aggressively appropriates the space, thus generating culture among its inhabitants.
The relationship of the interior with the exterior and the connection with the already established pre-existence is considered an important factor for public space, urbanism, nature, urban landscape, not only as an indicator of urban quality but also as a privileged instrument. to make the city on the city, that is, carrying out a well-planned strategy, with urban renewal, with a single purpose that will be to achieve the appropriate intervention that serves to train the peripheries, to maintain and renovate the old centers and produce new centralities, to suture urban fabrics and give citizen value to infrastructures, through parks, squares, cultural facilities that generate a quality appropriation of space for citizens, that is, that have the appropriate characteristics of circulation and occupation and comfort for maximum use and enjoyment of various activities.
There are many examples in which public space is considered from different public and private spheres, commercial areas that reproduce streets and squares and that are no longer closed and exclusive spaces; but stations and hospitals that are also multifunctional teams; university and cultural facilities that are closed spaces and access to them is not so easy, but which together constitute what is the public space of the city.
That is why the public space must guarantee, in terms of equality, the appropriation by the different sectors, both collective, social and cultural, gender, age, race or sex. The right to public space, which is free, easily accessible, and not exclusive, since it is ultimately the right to exercise as a citizen since it is a right that everyone who lives and wants to live in the city has. | |
