El consumo de polietilen tereftalato (PET) ha aumentado en los últimos años ya que se usa en la fabricación de fibras y botellas para bebidas. Durante su procesamiento se generan excedentes industriales que se pueden reciclar mecánicamente. En la empresa Iberplast S. A. S. se producen aproximadamente 400 Ton de excedentes industriales en un mes; de estos excedentes el reintegro al proceso en algunos meses es alto y en otros bajo. El PET reciclado es utilizado mezclado con material original en los mismos procesos. El objetivo de este trabajo fue analizar el aprovechamiento de estos excedentes y encontrar las mejores condiciones de operación del cristalizador de esta empresa, modificando la temperatura y tiempo de residencia con el fin de obtener un PET reciclado que tenga propiedades mecánicas y térmicas similares a las del PET original. El material reciclado se caracterizó teniendo en cuenta las reacciones de hidrólisis y descomposición térmica, mediante la viscosidad intrínseca, la concentración de acetaldehído, el análisis termogravimétrico (TGA) y calorimetría diferencial de barrido (DSC). Por último, se realizó un análisis de costos con el fin de evaluar la reducción en costos de compra de materia prima debido al mayor consumo de PET reciclado mecánicamente obtenido en el cristalizador. Este PET reciclado presentó una viscosidad intrínseca inferior en un 20% respecto al valor del material original. El material obtenido puede utilizarse mezclado con material original en la fabricación de nuevas botellas de volumen de 1 L a 1,5 L. Para la empresa Iberplast los resultados del estudio permitieron identificar los niveles más bajos, 165ºC y 3 horas de residencia, en el cristalizador como las mejores condiciones de operación para el reciclaje de excedentes industriales de PET. En el análisis costo beneficio se determinó que el consumo de PET reciclado favorece económicamente a la empresa
