| dc.description | Luego de fallidos vaticinios sobre la muerte del libro, la novela impresa no sólo sigue ganando adeptos en la segunda década del siglo XXI, sino que no deja de evolucionar. Una de las formas de hacerlo es volviéndose multimodal (incorporando recursos semióticos no verbales) con una fuerte impronta visual, a la vez que estiliza géneros históricamente no asociados a la ficción. En ocasiones, éstos pueden volverse estructurantes, es decir, pasar a regular la estructura de la novela como un todo. Important Artifacts and Personal Property From the Collection of Lenore Doolan and Harold Morris, Including Books, Street Fashion and Jewelry, de Leanne Shapton, reúne ambas características: es marcadamente multimodal, y adopta un género estructurante no convencional. El texto se presenta bajo la apariencia de un catálogo de subasta, donde se ofrecen a la venta las pertenencias de los protagonistas de una relación amorosa, cuyo desarrollo el lector irá descubriendo a medida que avanzan las páginas. El presente trabajo propone abordar la obra de Shapton desde una perspectiva bajtiniana, explorando la motivación de la estilización del género estructurante escogido, y cómo éste resulta tanto funcional para la narrativa como atractivo para los lectores del siglo XXI. | |
| dc.description | After failed predictions about the death of the book, the printed novel not only continues to gain advocates in the second decade of the twenty-first century, but also keeps on evolving. One of the ways of doing so is becoming multimodal (incorporating non-verbal semiotic resources) with a strong visual imprint, while stylizing genres that have not been historically associated with fiction. At times, these can become structuring, that is, regulating the structure of the novel as a whole. Important Artifacts and Personal Property from the Collection of Lenore Doolan and Harold Morris, Including Books, Street Fashion and Jewelry, by Leanne Shapton, has both features: it is highly multimodal, and it also takes the form of an unconventional structuring genre. The text appears to be an auction catalog, where the belongings of the protagonists of a love story are offered for sale, and whose affairthe reader will discover as the pages progress. The present work suggests approaching Shaptons work from a Bakhtinian perspective, exploring the motivation of the stylization of the chosen structuring genre, and how it is both functional for the narrative and appealing for21st century readers. | |
