en ella sacan inspiración. Marcial nos describe Roma de tal manera que de su
mano podemos recorrerla. A Juvenal, en cambio, le interesa más el paisaje humano
y moral que el físico.
Pero
la Vrbs
es también
la cosmópolis en la que se
reúnen
viajeros
e inmigrantes
procedentes de
todas
partes.
La
movilidad
entre
el
centro y
la periferia se da
en
ambas direcciones
y
así
aparece representada
en
los dos autores; pero,
mientras Marcial ve
ventajas
en el
Imperio porque
en
todo su espacio se difunden
sus libros
y
su fama inmortal,
para Juvenal,
el
espacio
imperial
es casi
siempre
fuente
de
ansiedad
y corrupción,
porque
de
él
vienen
los
inmigrantes
que
desplazan
socialmente
a
los
romanos
y
el
lujo
que
los
corrompe. | |
| dc.description | The space of the Vrbs provides the scenario of the works of Martial and Juve-
nal: the life they observed there served as inspiration. Martial describes Rome
in such a way that we can walk through its streets. Juvenal, in contrast, is more
interested in the human and moral landscape than in the physical one. But the
Vrbs is also the cosmopolis, the meeting place of travellers and immigrants
from all over. The mobility between the hub and the periphery works in both
directions, and is represented thus in these two authors. Whereas Martial sees
advantages in the Empire because his books and everlasting fame are disseminated
throughout it,
for
Juvenal
the imperial
space
is
almost always
a
source
of
anxiety and corruption, because he sees it as the source of immigrants who
come to socially displace Romans, as well as the source of the luxury that corrupts
