Resumen
The study focuses on the way in which a group of young people living in working-class neighborhoods in the city of Cali, Colombia, uses rap to construct its social identities. The data derive from ethnographic research conducted with prominent Cali rap groups in 1998 and 2000. Discussion centers on two themes: (1) characterization of the type of identity young people construct around this cultural phenomenon, and (2) analysis of these identities as a type of symbolic productivity by which these young people resist and fi ght the conditions of poverty and social exclusion in which they live.
