Rice is the most cultivated cereal in the world after wheat. In Cuba the introduction of rice was around the year 1750, and for many years its production was dedicated to self-consumption, passing the process of cultivation extension by three stages, with the distribution of seeds, increase of the areas and tariff guarantees, and in This context presents the disease of the white leaf of rice, which seriously threatened the production of cereal from its dissemination in 1956. In this work is related as in the Agronomic Experimental Station of Santiago de las Vegas, Eng. Julián Acuña Galé and a group of researchers led by him, managed, with a multidisciplinary work, to clarify the nature of the disease and its vector, Sogata orizicola Muir, its life cycle, chemical and biological control and prevention through the rotation of crops, elimination of intermediate hosts and sowing of resistant varieties, which allowed that when the disease resurfaced eleven years later, the technical knowledge necessary for its prompt elimination.
