En los estudios quinto y sexto de Sí mismo como otro (1996) Paul Ricoeur desarrolla su teoría sobre la identidad narrativa, en la que expone que nuestra identidad personal tiene un carácter narrativo en la medida en que podemos comprender nuestra vida a la luz de narraciones en las que nos identificamos como un mismo agente que las protagoniza y a partir de las cuales podemos plantear posibles caminos de acción. En el presente trabajo se sostiene la idea de que la imaginación tiene una función configurativa en las dimensiones poéticas, prácticas e históricas de la identidad narrativa. Se muestra que la imaginación tiene una función sintética y productiva por la que podemos crear vínculos de semejanza entre diversos elementos y producir nuevos significados; así, en las dimensiones poéticas y prácticas de la identidad, la imaginación permite sintetizar múltiples eventos de nuestra vida en una historia sobre la que podemos reflexionar e imaginar nuevas acciones que podemos emprender y nuevos modos de comprendernos a nosotros mismos. Por otro lado, la imaginación también nos aproxima a la experiencia de otros con los que se imbrica la historia de nuestras vidas. Se propone a partir de Tiempo y Narración III (2009) que estas otras vidas son de contemporáneos, predecesores y sucesores con los cuales configuramos un vínculo por el que nos reconocemos como parte de una historia común en la que nos imaginamos con otros y respecto a la que podemos imaginar acciones nuevas. Por este vínculo histórico entre contemporáneos, predecesores y sucesores se afirma que la imaginación también posibilita la configuración de una dimensión histórica de la identidad en la cual se enfoca la presente investigación.
