dc.description.abstract | In the last few years, the unemployment rate in Colombia has gradually dropped without generating any noticeable effect on inflation. One possible explanation for the lack of inflationary pressures is a decline in the natural rate of unemployment (NAIRU), reflecting improvements in the efficiency of the labor market. This paper seeks to understand whether the unemployment's trend is explained by a cyclical or a structural change. To solve the question, a Beveridge curve (the relationship between unemployment and vacancies) is constructed for the period 1976Q1-2014Q2 and it is used with a Phillips curve (the relationship between inflation and unemployment) to estimate the NAIRU. The results show that the NAIRU has fallen, reaching a level below 10% at the end of 2013. This suggests that the efficiency in the match between labor supply and demand has improved.
