A representação de Tiradentes na numismática e na filatelia

Abstract

Diversos personagens da história do Brasil tiveram suas “representações faciais” ou “alguns de seus feitos heroicos” estampados no dinheiro e no selo postal brasileiro. Dentre os personagens selecionados, o alferes Joaquim José da Silva Xavier, conhecido pelo seu apelido de Tiradentes, está entre as celebridades escolhidas pelo governo federal para ilustrar algumas de nossas moedas e cédula e também alguns de nossos selos postais. Assim sendo, é propósito desta Tese analisar as representações que Tiradentes recebeu tanto da numismática quanto da filatelia. Para isto, o texto está dividido em três capítulos. No primeiro analisam-se a sua trajetória de vida, o seu envolvimento no movimento da Inconfidência Mineira e a construção simbólica a que foi submetido para ser o herói da pátria. No segundo capítulo, analisamos a representação e a apropriação de Tiradentes no meio circulante, discutindo-se a aparição e a representação de sua imagem em duas moedas e em uma cédula de dinheiro. No terceiro capítulo, estudamos a imagem de Tiradentes na filatelia, recuperando-se a sua imagem em três momentos distintos, mas não conflitantes: em 1948, 1992 e 2008.

Several characters in the Brazil history had their “facial representations” or “some of their heroic deeds” stamped on the money and the Brazilian postage stamp. Among the selected characters, Joaquim José da Silva Xavier, known by his nickname Tiradentes, is among the celebrities chosen by the federal government to illustrate some of our coins and money bank note and also some of our postage stamps. Thus, it is the purpose of this thesis to analyze the representations that Tiradentes received from both numismatics and philately. For this, the text is divided into three chapters. The first one analyzes his life trajectory, his involvement in the movement of the Inconfidência Mineira and the symbolic construction to which he was submitted to be the hero of the country. In the second chapter, we analyze the representation and appropriation of Tiradentes in the circulating medium, discussing the appearance and the representation of its image in two currencies and in a money bank note. In the third chapter, we studied the image of Tiradentes in philately, recovering its image in three distinct but not conflicting moments: in 1948, 1992 and 2008.
