ABSTRACT: Total mercury concentrations and in each geochemistry fraction, were determined at the surface and at a depth
of up to 20 cm, in nine locations around the Cuyuní river at Las Claritas, mining area, Bolivar state, using cold vapor
atomic absorption spectrometry and scanning electron microscopy (SEM-BSE) and energy dispersive spectroscopy
(EDS). The concentrations of Hg were between 0.05 and 1.90 μg.g-1. Being the most elevated concentration found
around the San Isidro river. The highest concentrations of the metal in six localities were at superficial level (of 0
to 5 cm) and in the finest particles (≤63 μm). Mercury was mostly associated to humic substances and sulfur. It is
important to point out that mercury, in spite of being a toxic polluting agent, forms part of the major elements in
the soil of the studied sector. The values of Hg were above the established international limits for soils. For this
reason, it is necessary to take measures to diminish the presence of Hg in the zone. On the other hand, the results
demonstrate that the SEM can be a viable technique to evaluate mercury in contaminated soils, due to the speed
of analysis.
